Sport Newsletter 2011
We have had another phenomenally successful year of sporting achievements at school and we
also have had a huge array of different sporting activities running after school. It is not
all about winning; we aim to provide as wide a range of activities as possible to encourage
greater involvement from the children.
This ideology was officially recognised in January, when we received the award for Nottingham’s
‘Most Physically Active School’ at the Nottingham Sports Awards. We are very proud of this achievement,
which is a testament to the hard work of all our staff and children here at school.

Competitive Sporting Achievements
Football
Our Year 5/6 team have had another great season. We won the Nottingham South Schools’ Football
League. We played at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground in the finals of the Ron Matthew’s Trophy.
We also won our division at the City Karnival Festival.
Our Year 4/5 football team have also shown promise for future success by winning the qualifying group
stages at the City indoor 6-a-side finals, where we finally finished in 3rd place overall.

Rugby
Our Tag rugby teams have again had an absolutely phenomenal season. Our ‘A’ team won the Nottingham Trent
University Festival, the Varsity Grand Final (at Meadow Lane) and won the Nottingham City Schools’ Championships.
Our ‘B’ team had great success too, reaching the semi-finals of the Nottingham City Championships.
Both our ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams were chosen to represent Nottingham City at the Nottinghamshire County Championships!

Olympics/Athletics Team
Our Year 3/4 children entered the City Sports-hall Athletics Tournament at Emmanuel School.
They performed really well and competed with great skill and determination. It was a really
close result and we eventually finished in 2nd place out of nine schools.
We took 10 children in years 5 and 6 (5 boys and 5 girls) to the fantastic multi-sports
‘Clifton Olympics’ tournament in June against five other schools from across Clifton.
All the children took part in sprints, 600 metres, long jump and vortex howler events.
We had a great day and won the tournament!

Basketball
Our basketball team have worked really hard this season. Teamwork and technical ability have been
at the ‘core’ of our coaching, which have bought us great success. Our Monday night club was again
very popular and lasted throughout the autumn term. We took two teams to the City Festival and both
performed really well.
Cricket
We have put on a fantastic array of cricketing opportunities for our children this year. Our boys’ and
girls’ cricket teams have played in the Nottingham City Cup tournaments this year. Our Year 5 team
won the Clifton cricket festival. We have had professional coaches delivering lessons and an after-school
club to our Year 5/6 children through the ‘Chance to Shine’ project.
We are delighted to see more and more children joining Clifton Village Cricket Club.

Dance
Ten of our Year 3 children participated in the Clifton dance festival, where they danced alongside children from
across the Clifton family of schools. The children did themselves proud, showing real style and grace.

Gymnastics
Twenty of our Key Stage 1 children took part in the City Gymnastics Festival. They did so well that many of them
were chosen to attend the ‘Pyramid Acro Club’.
We also put on an incredibly popular Key Stage 2 Gymnastics club, with over 40 children regularly turning up each week!
Netball
We are thrilled that we now have a new netball club running in school this year! The children are expanding
their knowledge, skills and experience of how the game is played. We have even played our first match,
with lots more matches and competitions planned for the next academic year.
KS1 Sports
Our younger children absolutely love this club! If you currently have children in our reception classes, we
strongly recommend you apply for a place when it starts again next year, as it sets the children up with so many
skills that they will use in the future. Our teachers give the children the opportunity to develop skills in a
whole host of different sports. These sessions help to lay the ‘foundations’ that we build on in later years.

Swimming
Throughout the year, children from Year 2 up to Year 6 have regularly been going swimming. We believe
this ‘life-long’ skill is invaluable for all of our children. We have seen time and time again that,
as the children gain confidence in the water, they also gain confidence in the classroom and in themselves as well.
Ice Skating
A large number of our Year 3 children went on the ‘Skate and Animate’ Course at the Nottingham Ice Arena.
They enjoyed working through a programme of ice skating, alongside ICT activities. They even had the
opportunity to watch the Nottingham Panthers have a training session!
Table Tennis
Our children have had some fantastic coaching from Steve this year. The children, and Steve,
have loved these sessions and their skills have come on in leaps and bounds under his expert tutelage.
We entered the Year 3/4 and the Year 5/6 City competitions. Congratulations to Jessica for winning the
girls’ under 11s category, playing against Milford’s own Camarah in the final!
Rowing
Eight children in Year 6 competed in the Clifton Schools’ Rowing Festival at Farnborough School.
The team, consisting of four boys and four girls, made the final. This meant that they got the chance
to face the winners from each ‘pool’ from across the city in the city finals!
Girls' Athletics
We have been working on increasing the participation of our girls in sport this year, with really
positive results. We have been running an after-school girls’ athletics club and the girls that
have come along are beginning to show real improvements in their technique and stamina.
Boxercise
This is our Friday afternoon family fitness session. It is a tremendous opportunity to keep active
and healthy, while spending quality time with your kids. Mums and dads learn new skills to share
together with their children. It has been great to see the children working alongside their parents.
Staff and Pupils
We are fortunate enough to have some wonderful members of staff at
our school who have given up huge amounts of their own free time (without pay)
to arrange and run a fantastic selection of after school clubs this year.
Thank you to all those members of staff who have given up their time to
deliver after-school activities this year, the children have benefited
tremendously from your input.
Finally, and most importantly, a huge thank you to all the wonderful
children who have contributed to the amazing success in sporting
achievements at Milford this year. You are an incredibly talented team!

Due to our standing as Nottingham City’s ‘Most Physically Active School’, Milford Primary School was chosen
to represent the City of Nottingham at ‘The Olympic Torch Announcement Event’ in Market Square.
With Olympic athletes; Reuben Richards (Great Britain Tae Kwon-Do Team) and Jess Sylvester (Great Britain Swimming Team)
Many thanks for your continued help and support. Without it, the children wouldn’t be able to take part in any of these invaluable experiences.
